Groupama Arena is the venue as Ferencvaros and Zalgiris go head-to-head in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League qualifying quarter-final tie.
Ferencvaros made light work of their first qualifying round tie against Prishtina, winning both legs by at least a two-goal margin (3-0 H, 3-1 A). Remarkably, the Hungarian heavyweights have won their last ten outings ahead of the kick-off, friendlies included, netting an average of 2.6 goals per game in the process. At home, Peter Stoger’s men have lost just two of their 11 competitive matches since the calendar flipped to 2021 (W7, D2, L2), winning the last three in a row by an aggregate score of 8-1. Ferencvaros reached the Champions League group stages via the qualification process this past season. They now hope to advance to Europe’s top club competition group phase twice on the spin for the first time in the club’s history.
On the other hand, Zalgiris overcame Linfield in the first qualifying round, winning both legs by over 1.5 goals ‘to one’ and winning the first half ‘to nil’ on each occasion. The visitors take the field in the midst of a purple patch, having gone unbeaten in their last 12 matches in all competitions (W10, D2) since succumbing to a 2-1 away defeat to domestic rivals Nevezis Kedainiai back in early May. Virtually impenetrable at the back, Zalgiris kept eight clean sheets across that 12-game sequence, conceding precisely once per game in three of the other four. Away from home, the ‘Green Whites’ have netted over 1.5 goals in all but one of their last eight competitive road trips, with a goalless away draw with Riteriai in their most recent domestic travel being the lone exception.
