Celta Vigo vs Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid’s La Liga title defense begins this weekend as they head to the Estadio de Balaídos to take on Celta Vigo in their 2021/22 league opener.

Eduardo Coudet’s arrival at the helm in November 2020 saw Celta’s league form take an upward curve as they claimed their highest La Liga finish in five years (8th) on the back of a positive record under his stewardship (W8, D6, L6). A 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Real Betis on Matchday 38 back in 2020/21 ended Celta’s five-game winning La Liga streak, their longest winning top-flight run in the 21st century. That could serve as an incentive for ‘Los Celestes‘ to end a run of five consecutive top-flight openers without winning (D2, L3). Quick out of the blocks, Celta found the opening goal in six of their final seven La Liga fixtures in 2020/21, taking four half-time leads in the process.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid wrapped up their first La Liga title since 2013/14 despite a significant form wobble at the beginning of 2021. After pledging his future to the Wanda Metropolitano outfit for another two years, Diego Simeone will be aiming to guide Atletico to their first back-to-back top-flight titles since 1949/50 and 1950/51. Delivering action from the get-go, ‘Los Rojiblancos‘ have never lost their opening day La Liga fixture during Simeone’s tenure (W3, D6), highlighting the potential for another blistering start to the season. Early action is also on the cards, with both of their league meetings with Celta last season featuring the opening goal inside the first 15 minutes of play. Additionally, Atletico scored over 1.5 goals on both occasions, which was the case in their 22 La Liga outings in 2020/21!
