Leicester City vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Leicester City will play host to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the King Power Stadium as the 2021/22 Premier League season gets underway this weekend.

A hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Manchester City in the Community Shield gives Leicester fans plenty of reason to look forward to the new campaign as the ‘Foxes’ hope to break into the Premier League top four after back-to-back fifth-place finishes. However, Leicester’s form at the back end of last season will be something they will be keen to improve upon this term. Brendan Rodgers’ side claimed just one win in their final five Premier League fixtures (D1, L3), with four of those matches seeing over 2.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet. There is a good omen here, though, as Leicester have suffered just one defeat in their last 24 home league encounters against Wolverhampton (W14, D9), courtesy of a 4-1 thumping in the 2006/07 Championship season.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton oversaw a managerial shift this summer after missing out on a top-half finish for the first time since returning to the top-flight, with Bruno Lage replacing Nuno Espirito Santo in the dugout. One of Lage’s primary tasks in the West Midlands will be to increase Wolves’ paltry goalscoring return of 36 league goals last season (0.94 on average). Indeed, the visitors’ scoring woes saw them net under 1.5 goals in their final seven Premier League trips of that campaign. In fact, only dead-last Sheffield United (8) notched fewer away top-flight goals than Wolverhampton (15) last term. But first, the Portuguese tactician will be aiming to bring the Wanderers’ three-game Premier League losing streak to a halt. Encouragement could come from the fact Wolves have not lost their opening fixture across the last eight domestic league campaigns (W4, D4).
