Mexico vs Canada

Mexico and Canada go head-to-head at the Estadio Azteca in an exciting CONCACAF World Cup qualification showdown.

Mexico picked themselves up from back-to-back grand final defeats to the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup, respectively, to hit the ground running in the World Cup qualification campaign. ‘El Tri’ came from a 1-0 half-time deficit to hold Panama to a 1-1 away draw last time out, having won their opening two World Cup qualifying fixtures by a slim one-goal margin. Pursuing their eighth consecutive World Cup finals appearance, the Mexicans currently sit atop CONCACAF’s World Cup qualification group, harboring a two-point lead over the chasing pack. A three-match unbeaten start to this World Cup qualification campaign gives Mexico confidence that they can do better than their ‘Russia 2018’ qualification series when they suffered just one defeat in 16 games (W11, D4).

In the meantime, Canada responded to back-to-back 1-1 draws with Honduras and the United States at the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign with an overwhelming 3-0 home victory over El Salvador last time out. Including the preliminary rounds, the ‘Canucks’ are unbeaten in their nine World Cup qualifiers for Qatar 2022 (W7, D2), returning a resounding +33 goal difference for good measure (GF:36, GA:3). However, a trip to Mexico might stir some painful memories, as they’ve lost all five World Cup qualifying visits to this country by an aggregate scoreline of 14-1. Alarmingly, four of those five defeats have come by at least a two-goal margin. End-to-end action remains on the cards, though, as three of Canada’s last four competitive fixtures have seen both teams score.
