Poland and Hungary are set to trade tackles in their final World Cup Qualification Group I showdown at the PGE Narodowy.
Poland swept a 10-man Andorra side away with an overwhelming 4-1 away win last time out to ensure a top-two finish in Group I going into the final matchday. Having won their last three World Cup qualifying games by an aggregate score of 10-1, the Poles are looking to complete their third-best World Cup qualifying campaign in terms of victories. Though they boast a positive historical H2H home record against Hungary (W2, D1, L1), it’s worth noting that just one of those wins came in a competitive encounter. However, the ‘Eagles’ will be confident of posting another success here after picking up eight triumphs in their last nine World Cup qualifying fixtures at home (D1). What’s more, Paulo Sousa’s men have netted 4+ goals in two of their three home matches since exiting Euro 2020.
As for Hungary, a 4-0 thumping of minnows San Marino in the previous round was only a consolation for the visitors, as they’ve failed to qualify for the World Cup finals for the ninth time in a row. Yet, that win halted Hungary’s two-match winless run in the ongoing qualifying campaign (D1, L1), marking their first clean sheet in ten competitive games. But barring three-goal victories over Andorra and San Marino, the Hungarians have failed to win their remaining two road trips in Group I (D1, L1), scoring under 1.5 goals on each occasion. Curiously, though, excluding their Euro 2020 participation, Marco Rossi’s men have avoided defeat in all but one of their eight international travels (W5, D2) since the start of 2020, showing they know how to put up a fight on foreign soil.
