RB Leipzig’s hopes of making it out of the UEFA Champions League group stage are on the line as Paris Saint-Germain arrive at the Red Bull Arena.
Leipzig suffered late Bundesliga heartache against Eintracht Frankfurt over the weekend, being held to a 1-1 draw, courtesy of a 94th-minute equalizer. New manager Jesse Marsch is still trying to find the right balance as ‘Die Roten Bullen’ face an almost impossible task of improving their Champions League prospects following three defeats from three Group A matches. Indeed, the Germans stare at genuine risk of being denied springtime in European football for the first time in four seasons, especially considering they’ve lost three of their four Champions League meetings with PSG (W1). That record ties in well with their recent struggle against French clubs, as they’ve only won once in their previous seven encounters against such rivals (D1, L5). Moreover, Leipzig have lost their last two Champions League home matches, as many defeats as they had in their first ten at home in the competition (W6, D2).
In the meantime, star-studded Paris Saint-Germain have recovered from an abysmal 1-1 draw with Group A minnows Club Brugge on Matchday 1, stringing together two Champions League wins to move to the top of this section. Adding to their confidence, PSG came from behind to beat defending Ligue 1 champions Lille 2-1 at home over the weekend, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to four matches (W3, D1). ‘Les Parisiens’ have only suffered one defeat in their last nine away games in the Champions League group stage (W5, D3), courtesy of a 2-1 loss at this exact venue in 2020/21. After beating Bayern Munich on the road in last season’s Champions League quarter-finals, Paris will be chasing two consecutive away victories on German soil for the first time in the club’s history.
