Fierce rivals from the Balkans are set to square off at the Stadion Stožice as Slovenia and Serbia go head-to-head in an exciting UEFA Nations League showdown.
Ten-man Slovenia held Group B4 leaders Norway to a goalless away draw last time out to get their underwhelming 2022/23 Nations League season up and running following back-to-back defeats. One of them saw Slovenia collapse in an abysmal 4-1 thrashing in Belgrade less than a fortnight ago, halting their run of consecutive H2Hs without losing in competitive action (W1, D1). That trend could well go on, as Matjaz Kek’s men have gone scoreless in three of their last four Nations League outings (D2, L2) since earning promotion to League B in 2021. On a more positive note, the Slovenians have only lost three of their 18 home internationals since 2018, making themselves reasonably hard to beat on home turf.
In the meantime, Serbia have bounced back from a poor Nations League start, beating Slovenia and Sweden in their last two Group B4 games by an aggregate score of 5-1. With a 1-0 home loss to Norway now firmly behind them, the Serbs are after their fifth win in six away internationals (W4, L1). Getting on the scoresheet first could prove vital to Serbia’s hopes of beating Slovenia. Indeed, four of their last five away victories have seen them draw first blood. Dragan Stojkovic’s men have been nothing short of outstanding in the Nations League thus far. They’ve lost just three of their 15 outings across the three editions to date, including an undefeated 2018/19 campaign that won them promotion to League B.
