An all-Wuhan Chinese Super League showdown pits table-topping Wuhan Three Towns against mid-table Wuhan Yangtze River at the Puwan Stadium.
The 2022 Chinese Super League season has been plain sailing for Wuhan Three Towns thus far, as they’ve won all but one of their opening eight matches (D1), including the last five on the trot. Comfortable at the top of the standings, a point clear of runners-up Shandong Taishan with a game in hand, Pedro Morilla’s men have netted a league-high 27 goals thus far. In fact, they are the only side in the Chinese Super League to have hit a 20-goal milestone this season, with 63% of them coming on home turf. Not only have the ‘Three Towns’ won all four home league matches this season, but they have done that by an aggregate scoreline of 17-3.
As for Wuhan Yangtze River, goals on either side of halftime helped them beat relegation-battling Guangzhou 2-1 last time out and put an underwhelming four-match losing league streak to a halt. Mid-table lethargy is Wuhan’s reality these days, and their ‘winner takes all’ habit is unlikely to benefit their cause here. Indeed, none of the visitors’ eight top-flight fixtures this season have ended level (W4, L4). But more importantly, after winning their opening two league matches on hostile turf, they’ve lost the last two on the spin by an aggregate score of 4-1.
